Water Damage FAQ

What is water restoration?

Water restoration refers to the process of cleaning up, drying out, sanitizing, and restoring the materials that got damaged as a result. Water damage can cause a number of problems. Some of them can include the following:

– Rotten wood.
– Mold growth.
– Bacterial growth.
– Rusty metals.
– Swelling of composite woods.
– Delamination of materials (including plywood).

Water restoration can include a larger number of repairs beyond simple water damage cleanup.

What are the different classes and categories of water damage?

After the flow of water has been stopped, an inspection of the damage will be performed before the cleanup can begin. Its purpose is to determine what type of water damage has occurred (which is divided into classes) and what kind of water the property has been exposed to (which are broken into categories). The extent of the water damage is broken into four classes, with Class 4 being the most extensive.

The level of contamination will determine the category of water damage. To identify the risk of illness, the industry rates water sources into three categories. Category 1 refers to water that has come from a clean source (such as a water fountain). Any water that comes from a washing machine or dishwasher is referred to as “gray water” and falls under Category 2 (which is water that contains detergents and other substances that can be harmful to humans).
Category 3 water is the most dangerous because it comes from a dirty source (such as a sewer system and a toilet with feces). It can also include flood water that contains debris. The water restoration team will have to wear personal safety gear while they’re on site to prevent any additional contamination.

Do I have to worry about mold?

If water has gotten into your home or building because of a flood or leak, higher moisture levels (which is mixed with low light levels and poor ventilation) will increase the chance for mold growth. You should take care of any water damage as quickly as possible, because it will minimize the risk of mold growth (which is the most expensive to repair). Aside from cleaning the affected area, some additional material may need to be removed as well. Because mold spores can spread so easily, controlling ventilation levels and using air scrubbers can help as well.

Our Emergency Restoration Testimonials

We called Gulf Shore Disaster in the days right after Hurricane Ida. Jesse, Jeff, and the crew showed up to my home on time and were prompt to get immediate water mitigation equipment up and running on generator power until power could be restored. This no doubt saved the rest of my home from growing mold and further damage since we were able to get the free water mopped up and the moisture in the home lowered. The crew showed up daily to top off the generator and keep it running until main power could be restored and they could show up to begin demolition of the water saturated insulation and sheetrock. This was no easy task for them given the fuel shortage issues all over the city and parish. All damage was documented thoroughly w/photos and moisture meter readings. They used the same software that most insurance companies deal with to document square footages removed and linear feet of trim removed. This helped get the proper documentation needed to the insurance company to have them start providing payouts for claims in a timely manner with only minor follow-up adjustments needed. I would consider using them again in a disaster.

5 star review!

We contacted Gulf Shore Disaster Restoration to preform mitigation services after Hurricane Ida in Louisiana. We were fortunate to find this company to do the mitigation work for us. This company has been incredible and have always been professional, very good about getting back to our requests and keep us updated. They definitely do great work, keep records, take photos and store all personal belongings for their clients. They work closely with the home insurance company to make certain that the client does not have to deal with all the legality, paperwork and stress of the entire insurance process. I might add that Gulf Shore has worked with us while we are in another state and have not had the opportunity to go back to our home in Louisiana. Gulfshore is trustworthy and professional. In addition, we have been told by our home insurance company that they are as impressed with Gulf Shore as we have been. To quote our insurance company “You have found yourself a very professional company, they are easy to work, with and submit requests in a timely manner.” We were very fortunate to find such a trustworthy company ! We highly recommend Gulf Shore Disaster Services. In addition, Gulf Shore Disaster is now beginning the Re-Build process for our home and we look forward to the same professionalism and great service. We highly recommend Gulf Shore Disaster !!
